Viraca Opens Blog, devArt

Today the all-new Viraca (Games) blog and deviantART webpages have been opened.

Viraca is a group of four graduates (myself included) working on an educational game for KS2 students here in the UK. The blog will run as a ‘the making of’ and a place for interaction between the developers (us) and the audience (the kids).

The deviantArt page will showcase concept art, advertising and screenshots from the game.

If you’d like to know more about the game, leave a comment here or at the Viraca blog and someone will be on hand.

Having just this moment heard the latest episode of Armando Ianucci’s Charm Offensive (Radio 4/iPlayer) I feel compelled to vent my frustration at what is, at best, the radio equivalent of the Monty Python Live tour.

It seems, on two levels, that Ianucci’s heart is not into this project. In one sense, he seems to have very little input – often passing punchlines to his less-knowledgeable (and thus, less witty) guests.

On the other, while the guest have a certain pedigree (this is radio 4, after all) the level of comedy - at least in terms of intelligence - is somewhat noticeable by its absence. Some jokes make you feel as if you have inexplicably switched over to poor-man’s Mock The Week (which is, in turn, a poor man’s HIGNFY).

The most redeeming features of the show are heavily rooted in the surrealist politics of Ianucci himself - and great as these vignettes are, they are uncharacteristically out of touch for a man of Armando’s standing . For example, his YouTube skit is both out of touch (in that the content of his lampooning is trite fair such as “An iceberg slowly melting to avante-garde music”, and also misses the visual side of his comedy, in that you could imagine the sub-par jokes working, if only they had been accompanied by his trademark video direction.

it’s a far, far cry from his earlier radio shows and indeed from his recent opus, The Thick of It. One can only hope that the reasoning behind this streamlining is due to his continuous efforts to reach his eventual Zenith – hopefully with the now-shooting The Thick of It film.
